ok, so we're talking people i didn't know offline first, right? because that narrows the field considerably. if we count all my lj friends, then we go back to 1981! my sister, [livejournal.com profile] angel_machine, is on lj, so i've known her the longest. past that, [livejournal.com profile] faerieem and i were in second grade together.

if we are talking people i met online first, but not necessarily on lj, then i would have to say [livejournal.com profile] jinxremoving. we met online through [livejournal.com profile] thisredrock in 1997, corresponding through email and reading one another's self-made online journals, before the advent of the blog. we lost touch after a couple of years, but then i went into the edinburgh comm on lj about five years ago and asked about her, figuring that she knew everyone in town, and sure enough there she was. we have not yet met in person, but we are negotiating doing so sometime this year, and it will be epic.

at the same time, [livejournal.com profile] thisredrock and i were on an ani difranco listserv run by [livejournal.com profile] zonereyrie, where we talked to [livejournal.com profile] _fierceflawless about picking up some extra concert tickets in april 1998. unfortunately, one of our compatriots gave her awful directions and she never found us :( but i found *her* again about a year later, and we did finally get the chance to meet up not quite a year after that.

and finally, if we are talking people i met on livejournal first, the list is even shorter. it's hard for me to remember just who was around first, but it comes down to [livejournal.com profile] karafaerie, [livejournal.com profile] mlfoley, [livejournal.com profile] sanmiguelmalo, and [livejournal.com profile] softanimal. so thanks, eljay!

either northern exposure or wonderfalls. i'm super sad that wonderfalls got canceled before we got to find out just where it was going, just when all the relationships started getting really interesting and the characters started to grow. i would totally call a do-over on that decision if i were the network. and northern exposure...well, if i could live somewhere like that, with people like those, how happy i would be...every time i am in the dj booth lately, i think of chris in the morning.

writing, actually. i'm terribly afraid that i'm actually a really poor writer and one day someone will point this out to me. but when that particular neurosis isn't plaguing me, i think i'm a good writer with the potential to be much better.

to that end, i'm taking two classes starting next week. one is editing for the media, focused on newspaper writing, and it'll teach me AP style and all those funny little editing marks for which red pencils were invented. the other is beginning short story writing, and i'm hoping to have a lot of fun with that one. everyone has said i will love the professor, and i have plenty of ideas for stories. unfortunately, none of them will actually be fiction. fortunately, my life so far has been more interesting than fiction :)

if we end up staying here, i have a decision to make. i was feeling overwhelmed today about all the classes i still have left to take. so i considered what would happen if i just didn't worry about the honors degree or minoring in anthropology. (granted, the minor would actually advance a career goal for me, whereas the honors degree is more self-indulgent and probably good only for grad school entry.) turns out if i just concentrate on graduating, i only HAVE TO HAVE TO take 18 more classes after spring quarter. that's pretty doable. i could work full-time and still graduate in two more years. or i could cut back to part-time, maybe quit even if we're in financial shape for that, and up my load to five classes a quarter. then i might be finished before 2009 is over! that would be LOVELY. i make myself no promises, though. i still have to wait to see whether we're moving or not.

i wish the days of record shops weren't ending. when i worked at independent records in colorado springs, i resolved that i would someday have a place like that. i really want to own a music shop. in fact, i'd love a combination music shop and performance space with cafe. the coffee part wouldn't be that hard to do - i know a decent amount about that already, having worked in coffee for a while. i've said many times that i didn't want to work in service or retail again unless i could be the boss. i don't know what the new paradigm will be...

oh! hi. yeah, i haven't updated in a while. i've been in noho for the past couple of days, and today [livejournal.com profile] aliyaskie and i are driving down to new york for another couple of days. then we'll both fly back to ohio and hang out until next weekend, when she flies home. it's super exciting and i'm having a ton of fun. we caught an erin mckeown concert at the iron horse on friday night, which was gorgeous and magical and crushworthy and also featured MISS sara lee on the bass!, and dude erin is super freaking hot. i never had a crush on her when we used to go see her at fire & water, and now it's like getting out of control. :) then we hit grampy's and had a post-concert clove because dude, we needed that.

also friday involved rain, beautiful colors (noho is just now turning, but the interstates are in full fall regalia), non-functioning noses at the yankee candle village, and a restaurant at yankee candle called chandler's (ms. chanandler bong's, we've decided) that serves dinner entirely by candlelight. saturday was hiking around campus taking way too many photos of stuff i've already got photos of. still, it was good, and smelling the moldy gamut again was nice. (the gamut is the rehearsal space for mendenhall, the theater building at smith.) in the late afternoon we drove out to lenox, in the berkshires, and walked around tanglewood, the summer space for the boston symphony orchestra. it's a special place for chicky, and i'll let her tell that story, but the short of it is that this place is GORGEOUS. the sun was just starting to set over the mountains, and the valley below us was bathed in shadows, and the trees burned gold in the light. we took a side trip afterward up to pittsfield to hit guido's fresh market, which is very whole foods-y but in a local way as opposed to a chain way. the bakery had creme brulee *and* profiteroles. i dug it muchly. then we drove to the holyoke mall at ingleside for a little clothes shopping and a little ben & jerry's; to cracker barrel for chicken 'n' dumplings for me and apple cheese chicken for the chickadee; and finally to bed in our super comfy beds.

and now we're getting ready to leave this place that was the origin of our friendship. bye, noho. next stop: new york!
